There’s a lot of discussion about the generation gap in today’s workforce. I’ve never been into labels… Gen X, Gen Y, Millennials, Boomers… But there are different expectations for someone who is 25 than 55 AND there are some similar expectations.
Guess what? You can do stuff… like solve your own problems, push yourself to complete projects and tasks that are important/necessary, seek honest feedback, stop taking credit for everything, and put down that dang phone.
Simon Sinek has written a guide. It’s good, and if you’re a Millennial reading this, then check it out.
But these 5 guiding principles are not unique to Millennials. I’ve seen it in all age groups, especially in weaker workplace cultures where the expectations aren’t clear.
So read these and ask yourself one question: How am I doing at…? Then do your best to give yourself an honest assessment on a 1-3 scale. Heck, use these as your rating: 😀😐🙁. If you’re not all smiles, then it’s an area to work on.
No. 5 should be super easy. It’s not for some. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had 30-something and 40-something high-powered leaders respond to a personal text during a meeting. Put down the phone and give people your undivided attention. It’s common courtesy.
Numbers 1-4? This is where coaching comes in.
I help people of all age ranges learn how to use their strengths to solve problems, set and attain goals, learn how to receive feedback and serve others.
For business, think of me as (*your) Chief Culture Officer… with emphasis on the word ‘your’ – I will show you how to enlist, empower, equip, and encourage leadership.
As a personal performance coach, think of me as your ally. I‘m in your corner, fighting for you, listening to you, giving you feedback, equipping you with how-to-strategies to move past your barriers… and holding you capable to the goals you’ve set for yourself.
Is it time that we start a conversation? It’s easy, safe and free. But be ready, because once the blinders come off and you start to see your true potential, you will not be able to hold yourself back any longer.
Let’s do this!
